Dennis favorite maker was Fred Thomas—he feels that he made the finest tips with delicate but perfect performance. But he has great admiration for Jim Payne’s production. “Jim Payne was the most consistently excellent maker of them all in my opinion. He made a lot of rods but each one was well made, beautifully finished with consistent node staggering. No one past or present can say their whole body of work is as consistently excellent as Payne’s—the guide spacing is always on the money, even on rods made 20 years apart.” When asked what Dennis hopes for his own legacy he says “I’d like it to be remembered that I did not apprentice, I learned by study and practice and my work is well received by some of the great rod makers of my time.”
